Why is my hair limp and flat

Few things are more frustrating than hair that just looks flat and lifeless despite all of your efforts to give it volume and life. There are quite a few reasons for why this might be happening, just as there are quite a few ways to fix the problem with a few tricks and tips. But did you know that putting too much work into your hair can also make it appear limp and flat? Here are some of the top reasons your hair looks flat and some of the easiest hacks to fix the problem with little effort.

YOU ARE OVER BRUSHING

Remember in old movies and cartoons where a character would be depicted brushing her hair over and over because it was supposed to make it look healthier? While yes, it’s true that brushing your hair can help transfer oil from your scalp down through the hair to nourish it, over brushing your hair can also contribute to its dull, lifeless look. If your hair is fine and limp naturally, the last thing you want to do is brush it too much to only make it appear more flat. Instead of brushing your hair, go through it with a wide toothed comb after you shower to get any tangles out, and then style it as you usually would.

YOUR HAIR IS SECRETLY FULL OF PRODUCT

Think about how many products you add to your hair throughout the week. For most people, there’s shampoo and conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, a heat treatment, maybe an argan oil, a volumizing spray, a texturizing spray, a dry shampoo—really, the list goes on. Most people think that by washing their hair it removes all of that built up product in an instant, but it’s not true. Fun fact, your hair might be getting weighed down by weeks of excess product still lingering on your hair and scalp.

Not to worry, though, you can easily fix that problem with a quick detox. Using a detoxifying product once per week will help remove impurities from your hair and give your scalp the opportunity to breathe. If your hair feels weighed down, the removal of built-up product will likely help it feel lighter and look more voluminous. We recommend a product like the charcoal detox collection from Luseta Beauty to help remove impurities and neutralize any free radicals (pollution) that might have been absorbed in your hair while you were out and about. Try a detox once per week to remove any impurities from your hair to give it a chance to breathe, and we bet that you’ll notice that your hair feels weighed down a lot less than it did before.

YOU USE TOO MUCH OIL

You need a lot less hair oil than you think you do. If your hair is chronically greasy looking, try cutting back on how much hair oil you use to prevent it from feeling weighed down and looking flatter than you intend it to. Additionally, if you have a habit of pulling your hair back into a tight ponytail when it’s still wet or damp, that could likely be adding stress to your hair, causing it to appear dull and lifeless more often.
