Is caffeine good for hair

Some beauty tricks just come easier than others—in the case of caffeine, that one is a no brainer. More studies have recently shown that caffeine can help do more than just wake you up—it can combat hair loss. We’ve heard a lot of rumors that caffeine can help stimulate hair growth, so we wanted to get to the bottom of it and provide some insight into how, exactly that is. So, before you start drinking double the amount of your usual coffee or espresso order, read up on whether or not caffeine is good for your hair and hair growth below.

CAFFEINE FOR TREATING HAIR LOSS

What doctors know about hair loss—particularly hair loss that relates to genetics and aging—is that it stems from a couple of things: a significant shift in hormones or your body’s intake in vitamins and nutrients, or a significant change to DHT and ATP levels. When treating hair loss, caffeine generally does so to help the latter. Those with genetic hair loss are known to have higher levels of DHT in their bodies, and a presence of DHT is known to be one of the leading causes of hair loss in adults.

Caffeine can help the body produce more ATP, which helps the body stimulate hair growth to combat hair loss associated with DHT levels. This is especially true in patients with alopecia, a genetic disease that causes patches of hair loss around the body and scalp. Hair loss associated with this disease can be combated through the use of caffeine as a topical product applied to the scalp.

CAFFEINE FOR STIMULATING HAIR GROWTH

For patients with thinner hair or hair loss associated with a change in hormones or nutritional deficits, caffeine may help stimulate hair growth, but no real changes will occur if the root of the problem is not addressed or if the body is already making as much hair as it can. If your diet is severely lacking in nutrition that helps the body perform basic tasks, it may be time to address those issues to see if the problem goes away on its own with the right diet.

Hair loss associated with hormonal changes (such as pregnancy) is unlikely to be “cured” by simply adding caffeine into your routine. In the same sense, if your hair is naturally thin or extra fine, adding caffeine into your routine in hopes that it will suddenly give you a full head of thick hair is unlikely. Caffeine, however, can help stimulate hair growth. This will cause your existing hair to grow faster, helping your hair grow long and healthy. With regular trims, your hair will look and feel fuller as it won’t be prone to breakage and split ends due to fast growth.

Don’t go dumping coffee down your throat, though, because caffeine works best to stimulate hair growth when it’s applied topically. Look for hair care products that contain caffeine if you want to try this ingredient out for yourself. Things like shampoo and conditioner or hair masks that contain caffeine will help stimulate hair growth without meaning you’ll be up all night dealing with the side effects.

DOES CAFFEINE IN SHAMPOO WORK?

Interestingly, the caffeine we consume orally could have a role to pay in hair growth. As a chemical, caffeine targets the hormone DHT which is the culprit in hair loss. DHT clings on to hair follicles and stops them from absorbing the important proteins, minerals and vitamins that perpetuate the hair's growth cycle. Caffeine can keep DHT from attaching itself, thereby allowing the growth cycle to continue.
