Doctors (and your parents!) always say that eating clean is the best way to stay healthy, but eating common superfoods for hair is also the best way to achieve the hair of your dreams. Many companies advertise things like hair supplements to boost hair growth, scalp health, and overall shine and health in the hair. Supplements are a great way to achieve this, but without a proper diet you may actually be doing more harm than good.

These common superfoods are good for more than just your body—they’re good for your hair, skin, and nails too:

OYSTERS

These slimy snacks have a high concentrate of some of the most nourishing minerals and vitamins that can balance a healthy scalp and hair. Nutrients like zinc, folic acid, and iron help make the hair follicles strong, while preventing hair loss at the same time. Best of all? Oysters are low in calories and pack a lot into just a little bit of food, so there’s no need to worry about their fat content!

EGGS

We’ve talked before about how eggs are an essential ingredient in hair masks that help make your hair strong and shiny, but eating eggs is also an essential part of good nutrition and can help make your hair strong, lustrous, and healthy as well. Adding eggs into your diet regularly can help make your hair look and feel stronger because of their high iron and biotin composition.

POULTRY

Chicken is a great source of protein for few calories to begin with, but did you know that poultry is also a great way to give your hair a boost as well? Since your hair is pretty much made up completely of proteins, adding such a rich form of protein to your diet is one of the healthiest ways to care for your hair. If your hair is feeling a bit lifeless, it may be because you’re not getting enough protein.

DARK CHOCOLATE

As if you needed an excuse to indulge—dark chocolate is one of the best sources of antioxidants that help increase blood flow. This can help protect the hair (and the skin!) from potentially harmful free radicals that you’re exposed to through everyday life. Not only that, but cocoa is proven to reduce stress, which can help boost collagen production in the body—an essential part of hair and skin health. Stronger dark chocolate is best, but there’s no harm in having a little bit of regular dark chocolate every now and then.

SPINACH

As a longtime favorite among superfood lovers, spinach is a fantastic source of iron and beta-carotene. The green is rich in minerals and nutrients that can help protect the skin and hair. Spinach is also rich in vitamin C and folate, which contribute to a healthy scalp and stronger cuticles. Adding spinach into your diet is easy, and a little bit can go a long way because it’s so rich in essential nutrients.

WALNUT

Vegetarians and vegans will know that nuts are a great source of natural fats and essential proteins, but walnuts are one of the best types of nuts that you can put into your body. These nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and copper. All three of which can help nourish the hair and scalp, protect against UVA damage, and help maintain vibrant hair color.

RADISHES

Another great salad ingredient, radishes are rich in silica and vitamin C, which contribute to good circulation in the body. This may sound like it doesn’t do much for the hair, but good circulation can help boost hair growth significantly. Not only that, but these nutrients make the rapid hair growth strong and healthy. If you’re looking to grow your hair out, adding radishes to your diet on a regular basis can help you get there.
