What is OILY hair?

While oily hair is often shiny, it tends to look greasy and lack volume. Those with oily hair might also have problems with dandruff.

So what causes oily hair, and how can we fix it? Keep reading to find out!

Why CAUSES OILY Hair?

Every hair follicle has an associated sebaceous gland that produces sebum, a natural oil that keeps your hair and skin moisturized. People with oily hair, however, have sebaceous glands that produce too much oil.

Some people just have oily hair due to genetics. For example, if your parents have oily hair, you’re likely to have it as well. But oily hair can also be a temporary condition from changes in hormones, seasons, or climate. Has your hair ever looked extra greasy during that time of the month? That’s exactly what we’re talking about!

How to FIX OILY Hair

Whether your oily hair is genetic or just temporary, there’s a few easy ways you can treat it:

1. WASH YOUR HAIR LESS

It may sound counterintuitive, but washing your hair less can actually help to fix oily hair.

Washing your hair too much (like multiple times daily) can dry out your scalp, causing your sebaceous glands to overproduce oil. That’s why we recommend that you don’t wash your hair more than once per day.

If you hair looks greasy in between washes, use dry shampoo to soak up excess oil.  Or try a hairstyle that works with oily hair, not against it. Here’s some of our favorite hairstyles for oily hair:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJbKueSOrbQ

2. CHANGE THE WAY YOU WASH

While we can all agree that hot showers feel amazing, hot water can actually stimulate your sebaceous glands, causing them to produce more oil.

When you do wash your hair, use lukewarm or cool water to rinse it. And make sure to thoroughly rinse shampoo and conditioner from your hair before stepping out of the shower. Leftover product makes oily hair even more limp and lifeless.

3. RINSE HAIR WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

Apple cider vinegar is a great way to clarify hair, naturally removing annoying product buildup. Plus, its antiseptic properties kill the fungus and bacteria that cause dandruff, which is often associated with oily hair.

To make your own apple cider vinegar rinse at home, start by mixing two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water. Pour into a spray bottle, then spritz hair with the mixture until hair is saturated. Allow to sit for two to three minutes, then rinse out with cold water. Use two times per week for best results.

4. WASH WITH ALOE VERA

Aloe isn’t just great for soothing sunburns – it can also help oily hair. Aloe cleanses excess oils and product buildup from hair without drying it out.

You can make your own natural aloe vera shampoo at home by slicing open two aloe vera leaves , scraping out the gel inside, and filtering through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth. Get the full instructions here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkCEIst4ncM

5. MAKE A DIY MASK FOR OILY HAIR

This homemade hair mask helps to rebalance scalp oil production while moisturizing your locks. All you need is an egg and a lemon! Here’s how to do it:

      1. Crack the egg, then separate the egg white from           the yolk Add the egg white to a bowl and               discard the yolk.

      2. Using your palms, gently push down on the                 lemon  and roll on your counter to help release           its juices.

      3. Cut the lemon in half, then squeeze the                   juice  from half the lemon into the bowl.

      4. Mix the egg white and lemon juice together               until you reach a smooth consistency.

      5. Apply the mixture to damp hair and allow to               sit for 45 minutes .

      6. Rinse out the hair mask, then shampoo and                 condition your hair as normal.

So how does it work? Lemons are high in vitamin C, which cleans hair and absorbs excess oil, while the egg white works to condition and rebalance the scalp.

If you have oily hair, don’t despair. Since oily hair is so well-moisturized, it’s actually usually very healthy and shiny. Once you balance your oil production using these tips, your hair will look amazing!
