While the golden blonde tones of the early 2000’s hair trends may have come and gone, combating brassy tones and learning how to tone hair remains a struggle many are all too familiar with. Most natural hair colors will pull the brassy tones from your hair when exposed to dyes, so this can create an extra step when going lighter. Luckily, there’s a couple of easy fixes that will remove those brassy tones with ease, leaving behind beautifully vibrant blonde color.

FIND A TONER THAT WILL WORK FOR YOU

There’s a couple of types of toner that will remove brassy tones in lighter hair colors. However, not everyone’s hair is made the same and many will find that certain products are far too harsh for their hair. If your hair is prone to breakage or has suffered damage from bleaching already, it’s important to use a toning product that isn’t going to amplify your already present problems.

The types of toners out there are permanent, demi-permanent, semi-permanent, and temporary rinse. Each type of toner will last a different length of time, but that also means that each one has a different level of harshness on your hair. Finding the right toner for your specific needs can not only keep you from wasting money on products that you don’t actually need, but it can save you from having to go back to the salon to fix your mistake later on. Just like you shouldn’t use box dyes, you shouldn’t grab the first toner you see in the beauty store.

DEMI AND SEMI-PERMANENT

These two types of toners are essentially what they sound like they would be; fairly long-term. Demi-permanent toner will last the longest on your hair at around 24 washes. For most, this translates to around 4-6 weeks’ worth of toned hair. We recommend that you have your stylist use a demi-permanent hair toner if you’re unfamiliar with it yourself.

The same goes for semi-permanent toners, though they won’t last as long. Anything that can do permanent damage to your hair should be done in a salon to assure that no damage occurs beyond what would be considered normal for that product. These toners are generally only used when bleaching causes brassy tones to become more prevalent in your hair. This means you may only need to use them once; when you bleach your hair, and it would be unheard of for a stylist not to do it at that time if brassy tones do appear.

TEMPORARY RINSE

Temporary products are best suited for at-home treatments. These are products like purple shampoo because you put them directly on the hair and then wash them out right away. Temporary rinse toning products are best for regular use, and will keep your hair from drawing out brassy tones over time as your color rinses out. What temporary rinse toners won’t do, though, is dramatically alter the color of your hair as it is. Don’t expect to go from orange to grey with just a toning shampoo, but it can help maintain blonde color when used regularly.

Our favorite temporary rinse toner is our color brightening hair mask . It has purple tones that will draw out brassy tones in hair while nourishing it with essential vitamins and nutrients. It’s also free from sulfates and parabens, meaning that it won’t diminish your color during use. Sulfates and parabens have been known to remove color from color-treated hair. So products with these two ingredients may not be the best if you’ve just gotten your hair colored.
