Deep conditioning: why, when & how?

We've all seen the growing trend in using deep conditioners and heard that it's something we should incorporate into our hair routine. It's true! A good condition is essential in maintaining soft and manageable hair. With the various factors that go into damaging our hair like styling tools and the environment, it's important to take care of your hair and take an extra step past just a basic shampoo and conditioner.
Sounds like we should deep condition all the time then, right? No, you don't need to. It's something that should happen twice a month or even once a week depending on how dry and damaged your hair is. Over conditioning could result in a build up of residue on your strands and weigh your hair down.
In order to find the right product for your hair, figure out what kind of repairs it need, like split ends or colored hair. If you want to help nurture those ends, look for a deep conditioner that is reparative and for chemically damaged hair, look for hydrating and nourishing.
The process of deep conditioner is easy! After rinsing out shampoo, disperse a good amount of deep conditioner onto your hair and work it through to evenly coat each strand. A good tool that'll ensure the product is evenly spread is a wide tooth comb if you feel using your fingers isn't enough. Leave the conditioner in for 5-10 minutes or the recommended time and then thoroughly rinse it out.
For those who have an oily scalp but drier ends, use the the deep conditioner midway through your hair and down to the ends to prevent buildup at the roots. Also, if you feel like you're beginning to see buildup on your ends, simply stop using the deep conditioning for some time or use a clarifying shampoo to fully cleanse your hair.
Try it out and you'll immediately notice the difference!
