What is NORMAL hair?
Normal hair is shiny, healthy, and soft to the touch. Although this type is called “normal”, it’s actually the most rare hair type. Normal hair does require maintenance to keep it healthy and shiny. Improper hair care techniques can switch your hair to another type. Normal heads of hair produce just the right amount of natural moisturizing oils to keep hair hydrated without becoming too greasy. As a result, hair is strong, shiny, and bouncy. You can usually go a few days in between washes, and hair is easy to manage and style.
How to TAKE CARE OF NORMAL HAIR
1. PROTECT FROM HEAT
All hair types can benefit from this tip! Use a heat protectant spray before using any hot tool (straighteners, curling irons, etc.). Heat damages the cuticle layer of the hair, leading to dryness and breakage. Whenever possible, embrace heatless styling techniques to keep your hair strong and healthy.
Here’s some of our favorite ways to curl hair without heat
2. MASK WEEKLY
Your hair has naturally balanced moisture, which is great. But your hair also goes through a lot of wear and tear based on your environment and styling routine. Pollution, sun, blow dryers, and chlorine can all take a toll on this typically resilient hair type.
Replenish your hair by applying a nutrient-rich hair mask once per week. This one features pumpkin, one of nature’s superfoods that’s loaded with vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Plus, its antioxidant properties means that it counteracts the negative effects of environmental impacts.
Here’s how to make this mask at home:
● Mix one cup canned pumpkin with 2 tablespoons of honey
● Apply the mixture to your hair and scalp
● Cover hair in plastic shower cap and let sit for 15 minutes
● Rinse out mask and wash hair as usual
Use this mask once per week to help maintain normal hair.
3. DEAL WITH SEASONAL CHANGES
If you live in a climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters, you’ll probably notice some seasonal differences in your hair.
In the summer, roots tend to be more greasy. To absorb excess oils, use dry shampoo in between washes. On the flip side, dry winter air can pull the moisture from your ends, so use a leave-in conditioner to replenish your locks when the temperature drops
4. GET REGULAR HAIR TRIMS
Just because you won the hair lottery doesn’t mean you never need a haircut again. Normal hair can still get split ends, so it’s important to get regular trims. Otherwise, those split ends can spread up the hair shaft, resulting in breakage and frizz. We recommend having your hair trimmed at least every 8 to 12 weeks.
