7 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM DAMAGE WHILE IN A PONYTAIL

It can be tempting to put your hair up in a ponytail every day, but did you know that wearing your hair in a tight updo all the time can actually do more harm than good? While it may be a simple, quick way to get your hair away from your face, it can cause issues with breakage which can, ultimately, result in hair loss.

Not to worry, though, there are steps you can take to make sure that your ponytail and other updo’s are helping your hair stay healthy. We’ve put together seven tips to help keep your hair from getting damaged—even if you wear it in a ponytail every day.

NEVER PUT YOUR HAIR UP WHEN IT'S WET

When your hair is wet it becomes more porous and susceptible to changes. Brushing your hair or putting it up in a ponytail (or other updo) while its wet can snag the hair and cause breakage in the center, resulting in things like hair loss and permanent damage. If you do put your hair in a ponytail, wait until it’s dried before styling it.

USE FABRIC PONYTAIL HOLDERS

Remember those awful metal hair ties your parents made you use when you were younger? Thankfully, we don’t see much of those anymore. However, there are still ponytail holders on the market that can cause damage and unnecessary breakage. Next time you pick up a pack of hair ties look for the fabric kind that tie together. These are the most gentle type of hair tie and can prevent breakage by gently holding the hair together. Most rubber hair ties are tied too tight, which can cause headaches and overall breakage.

USE A SERUM

Putting a hydrating serum in your hair before you put it up into a ponytail can help reinforce your hair and keep it from incurring the unwanted breakage we mentioned earlier (which, by the way, can also happen to dry hair). The Biotin & Collagen Strengthening Oil from Luseta Beauty can help reinforce your hair and nourish it with essential proteins to prevent breakage from styling. Work a few drops of this luxurious oil into your wet hair, dry it as usual, and style. Combining a hydrating and nourishing serum with shampoo and conditioner that also contains nourishing properties is the best way to assure that your hair stays healthy despite being treated rough.

DON'T WEAR IT THE SAME WAY EVERYDAY

If you absolutely must wear your hair up in a ponytail every day to get it out of your face—whether it be because you go to the gym regularly or have a job that requires it to be out of your face—try switching up how you wear it in order to avoid breakage from tying it up in the same place. Braiding your hair, putting it in a low ponytail or bun, or simply changing the position of your ponytail can help keep your hair healthy.

GET REGULAR TRIMS

Like any other advice about avoiding breakage and damage, regularly trimming your hair is one of the best ways to keep it healthy if you wear it up in a ponytail frequently. Trimming the ends of your hair will get rid of any split ends or damage that can work its way up the hair shaft. It will also make it easier to brush, as damaged ends make the hair prone to tangles. If you’re growing your hair out, trimming it will keep it looking fuller as it approaches the ends. It may not make it grow any faster, but it will help keep your hair healthy as it gets longer.

DON'T MAKE IT TOO TIGHT

For the same reasons that we recommend using a fabric hair tie, making your ponytail too tight can put extra stress on it and, sometimes, pull it right out of the hair follicle. Many doctors will recommend avoiding tight ponytails as the tension can cause headaches, but it can also put a lot of stress on your hair. The best way to avoid this? Alternate how you wear your hair to prevent it from getting damaged.

WEAR IT DOWN WHILE SLEEPING

It may be tempting to preserve your salon blowout by putting your hair in a high bun while you sleep, but this can cause a lot of damage to your hair as it rubs against your pillow. If you wear your hair up frequently, it’s even more important to let it relax while you sleep. For many, particularly those with natural hair, the thought of wearing your hair down while you sleep is dreadful. We recommend swapping your hair tie and pillow case with satin or silk alternatives. This will be softer on the hair and will even keep it from getting frizzy as you toss and turn.
