What is DRY hair?

Signs of having dry hair include:

     ● Hair feels brittle and weak

     ● Visible split ends

     ● Hair tangles easily

     ● An itchy scalp with dandruff

Not pretty, right? Luckily, dry hair is pretty easy to fix at home. Keep reading to learn more about the roots of dry hair, and simple remedies for repairing dry hair.

WhAT CAUSES DRY Hair?

Your hair doesn’t have a way to moisturize itself – that job is left to your scalp. The scalp produces sebum, a natural oil that’s meant to travel down the hair shaft to keep your strands healthy and shiny.

However, if your scalp doesn’t produce an adequate amount of sebum to moisturize your hair, you end up with dry hair. And since our scalps produce less natural oils as we age, your hair type can actually switch to dry as you get older.

Dry hair can also be the result of hair damage. When you strip hair with harsh shampoos, chemically process your locks, or use heat tools too often, you can weaken your hair’s cuticle layer. When this protective layer is damaged, the moisture inside your hair shaft escapes. The result? Frizzy, brittle, and dry hair.

How to TREAT DRY Hair AT HOME

Do you have dry hair? Follow these simple tips and your hair will be looking healthier and shinier in no time!

1. change YOUR SHAMPOOING HABITS

If you wash your hair daily, cut back on shampooing to two or three times per week. If you exercise frequently, just rinse your hair post-workout with water instead of washing it with shampoo.

You’ll also want to swap out your usual shampoo for a gentler formula that will cleanse hair without stripping it of its natural oils.

2. DEEP CONDITION WITH A DIY HAIR MASK

While there’s plenty of amazing deep conditioning masks on the market, you can actually make one at home with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry! This DIY mask moisturizes, strengthens, and softens hair with just five simple ingredients.

All you need is:

     ● A banana - Bananas are rich in vitamins which help to make hair more flexible and thus prevent breakage.

     ● An egg - Eggs contain protein and healthy fats that add strength to brittle strands and moisture back into dry hair.

     ● Coconut oil - Coconut oil’s essential fatty acid content gives hair back its softness and shine.

     ● Olive oil - Olive oil nourishes and moisturizes dry hair.

     ● Milk - Milk also contains strengthening proteins, plus it soothes the scalp.

To make at home, first mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Apply to hair and let sit for at least 30 minutes, then wash your hair as you usually would. For extra dry hair, cover your hair with a shower cap and sleep overnight with the hair mask.

3. MASTER NO-HEAT HAIRSTYLING

Put down the curling iron! Heat styling your hair can damage the protein structure of your hair and dry it out. That’s why we recommend air drying your hair and styling sans heat whenever possible.

But just because you’re not using heat tools doesn’t mean you can’t have gorgeous locks. Learning some heat-free hairstyles will mean that your hair will look cute and stay healthy. Our favorites? French braids, top knots, and sleek ponytails. Find out how to do these and more heatless hairstyles here: ULTIMATE HEATLESS HAIRSTYLES
